A hike in the region Auvergne

In the Regional Park of Auvergne Volcanoes, this hike, that starts in the village of La Godivelle, will make you discover several landscapes and a diversified flora. You can visit the Nature Reserve of Sagnes and the peat bog museum.


1- From the church Place, go to the downward street in front of you. At the crossroads, take the road D32 on the left (Ardes direction). Continue on the road. Walk past a first track on your left and go up to the next track.
2- Take the left track up to the brook. Cross the footbridge and continue in the forest. Pass the little barrier and go up to the next crossing.
3- Take the left track, and, at the two next crossings, go on the right path.
4- Walk up to Foirail and go to the right road. Pass below Motte de Brion up to reach a narrow path on your right.
5- Take the narrow path which goes along the fence. Go down towards the wood. Cross the brook and take the track opposite up to the road D32.
6- Once on D32, turn to the left and take the road on your right which runs along Fraud Mountain. Continue up to the farm of Egouves.
7- Turn to the left and continue up to Jassy. In Jassy, take the right road twice, and continue up to you see La Fumadoune's house.
8- In the bend, take the footpath which rises on your right, and walk past the lake situated on your right. Reach the waterfall and continue up to a fence. Get over the fence and go straight ahead up to the road D32.
9- Turn to the left. Then, take the upward street on your right to get back to the starting point.

Noteworthy places

Le Village de La Godivelle. La Godivelle is a village situated in Cézalier Massif , South of Monts Dore, and it presents two peculiarities: this is the highest village in the department of Puy de Dôme (1203 m height) and the least populated (28 inhabitants).
Eglise Saint-Blaise. Church dating from the XIIth century.
La Couze d'Ardes. The river Couze d'Ardes flows in a former glacial valley. Couze is the toponymical name of torrents in the East of the mountain of Monts Dore. From a geomorphologic viewpoint, the route of these streams can be explained by way of several origines such as tectonic events and situation of lava flows (as they have formed natural dams in certain valleys); glacial phenomena being just limited to erosion.
Réserve Naturelle des Sagnes. The Nature Reserve of Sagnes was created in 1975 to protect a peat bog area around a lake with a glacial origin. It includes two lakes, Lac d'en Haut and Lac d'en Bas (i.e., Top Lake and Bottom Lake), with a total surface of 24 hectares. The origin of the higher lake lies in a volcanic explosion (it's a maar). In this place, carnivorous plants can be observed: sundew and butterwort. An aquatic spider, Argyroneta, lives in ponds. It constructs from sylk a diving bell that it uses to breathe under water. It is also one of the very rare species of spider living in France able to bite people with its chelicerae (poisonous fangs) for its defence (the bite is not dangerous). Other species of Arthropods living in this area are of interest to Science.
