A hike in the region Midi-Pyrénées

The hike is situated on the hillside of the Dordogne valley, in the country of Haut-Quercy-Dordogne, and starts in the village of Carennac. With its ancient buildings, this charming village is classified as one of the Most beautiful Villages in France.


1- From the Tourist Office, pass under the porch, and take the street on your left. Then, go to the right street. Cross the bridge and continue on the narrow road opposite.
2- Take the track opposite, and continue up to the next crossing.
3- Take the right track. Walk past the hamlet of Salsac. At the crossing, take the right path, and continue going up.
4- On the plateau, continue up to the crossroads.
5- Take the left track and again to the left at the next crossing. Walk past the hamlet of Teulières and go up to the next crossroads.
6- Take the track in front of you. Walk past the hamlet of Brillaye. Continue up to the road.
7- Take the road. Walk past the junction to Rouby and the hamlets of Mauriac and La Pasquie. Go up to the crossroads
8- Keep the same road which bends to the left. Cross the hamlet of Bouyssières and Fleyt, and continue up to the bend.
9- Take the Roman road on your left, which leads back to Carennac.
10- Take the right street, then the second street to the left. Turn to the left, then to the right to come back to the strating point.

Noteworthy places

Carennac. This medieval village was built around a priory which was dependent from Cluny (XIth century). For a time, Fénelon (1651-1715) was the dean of this priory.
Eglise Saint-Pierre. This Romanesque church is from the XIth century, and the tympanum from the XIIth century.
Le cloître. The most recent part of the cloister dates from the XVth century. The chapter house and the very beautiful Entombment are noteworthy.
Château du Doyen. It is said that it was in the castle of Carennac that Fénelon would have written the famous Adventures of Telemachus. Is is used nowadays for permanent exhibitions to present local heritage and culture (Espace Patrimoine du Pays d'Art et d'Histoire de la Vallée de la Dordogne).
