A hike in the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

A stroll by the seaside, around the Cassis' Calanques. During this hike, you can discover many panoramas and the variety of the local fauna.


Follow the circuit with blue markers, named "Les Calanques ".

1- From the car park, take the road opposite. At the crossing, turn to the left road.
2- Take the path opposite, continue up to a crossing of tracks.
3- Take the track on your left-hand side up to the next intersection of tracks.
4- At the first crossing, take the track on your left and continue quite straight ahead.
5- Take the track on your left- (GR51-GR98).
6- Leave the GR path to take the track on your right-hand side, so that you will turn around Refuge of Piolet.
7- Once you get back the GR path, take on your right. Leave twice a track on your left-hand side.
8- At the paths crossing, go to right and turn around the Trou du Souffleur.
9- Once you will come back to the begining of the 8th section, take the track to the right and go along a quarry. After the quarry, continue quite straight ahead to join the starting point.

Noteworthy places

Cassis. Situated on the blue coast at 20 Km from Marseille, Cassis is famous for its cliffs and Calanques (creeks), as well as for wine and stone.
Les Calanques. The term "Calanques" is used for steep rocky coasts dug in a resistant limestone and situated around Marseille. The Calanques peak at Cap Canaille which reaches 394 m high (East of Cassis). This is the highest maritime cliff in Europe. Calanques and Cap Canaille are classified sites.
Pierre de Cassis. The Cassis' stone, extracted from Calanques, is a limestone coloured with orange due to the presence of iron oxides. Its exploitation began from the Antiquity and has continued until nowadays, providing many buildings such as the quays of Alexandria and the pedestal of the Statue of Freedom. This stone is still used for sculpture.
