A hike in the region Auvergne

Saint-Floret in Auvergne, classified as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, is situated along the river Couze Pavin. From this village, go up to the keep of the castle, and do not forget to visit the site of Chastel on the other side of the river. This walk will lead you then through meadows and woods, before coming back to the village.


1- Cross the medieval bridge towards the site of Chastel.
2- Take the street "Chemin de Noyol" on your left, and immediately, the first track to the right. Continue straight ahead on this way up to a road. From there, the footpath on the right rises towards the site of Chastel, which deserves the visit.
3- Cross the road and take the track opposite. At the intersection, turn to the right. Leave a path on your right and go to the next intersection crossing.
4- Turn to the right. Continue straight ahead, leaving two paths on the right and a path on the left. Turn to the right at the next intersection, and continue up to reach the road D628.
5- Turn to the right.
6- Take the first track on the left, and just after, turn to the right. Leave two tracks on the left, and go straight ahead up to the road.
7- Turn to the right, and walk up to the first track on the left.
8- Take this track which descends to the road below.
9-10- Turn to the right, and come back to the village and the bridge.

Noteworthy places

Pont médiéval. The medieval bridge goes back to the XVIth century. It is topped by an oratory which presents a XIIIth century statue of the Virgin.
Donjon du château. The castle dates from the XIIIth century. A room in the keep presents frescoes depicting Tristan and Yseult legend. Visits by appointment only.
Le Chastel. This is a archeological site whih includes a XIIth century Romanesque church, an ossuary built upon a well filled with bones, and a Celtic cemetery.
