A hike in the region Midi-Pyrénées

A stroll around the village of Estaing, offering very pretty panoramas. Jewels of Haut-Rouergue, old seigniory. It is one of the most beautiful villages of France. Well-known for its castle and its cross on the bridge.


1- From the town hall, descend the street François d'Estaing. Take the 1st street on the right side (Saint-Fleuret street). Then, the second street on the left (Oultre street).
2- Continue on the way. At the
first crossing, turn on the right up to Ouradou.
3- Take the tarred way, pass behind the vault. Arrived on D97, cross and go up on 50m.
4- Take the way on your right, and continue on the lower way. Take on right at the crossing.
5- Take the road on your left, go up it on
100m.
6- Take the way right after the vines. Skirt the meadow on the left side.
7- Take the road on your right.
8- Take the way on your left which leads to a stone cabin. Skirt the meadows and take the way in the underwoods. At the first crossing go on to the way opposite you. At the exit of the underwood, go straight on. At the crossing, take the way below.
9- Take the road on your left which leads you back to the town hall.

Special conditions

Access limitation for riders. In the section 6, dismount from horse. Very narrow path with stairs. At the end of the field, open the fence and close it.
Access limitation for bikers. Same limitation as riders.


Events and information

Worth seeing. Every year, in September, just before the vintage, it takes place a History reconstruction with the participation of many inhabitants. It is called : "Les Médiévales" (people recreate the live in the Middle Ages).


Noteworthy places

Le château. This castle was built between the XVth and XVIth centuries by the successive génerations of the counts of Estaing.
La chapelle de l'Ouradou. The Ouradou vault was built about 1524. It is of ogival style. It contains two groups of stone statutes classified historic monument. Its visit is possible.
Le pont d'Estaing. Gothic bridge from the XVIth century, on the Lot river. It carries the statute of François d'Estaing and a very beautiful wrought-iron cross.
L'église d'Estaing. Saint-Fleuret church is built on the vestiges of a XI century Romanesque priory. It dates from XV century. Saint-Fleuret, who was bishop in Clermont-Ferrand, is the patron of the village. The church contains his relics.
