Worth seeing.
At half-way, a shelter, three walls and a roof, with a bench, can be an ideal place for a break. This is a former station, in Courcily, on the right side of road D68, at the corner with a small road that joins the road D31.
Noteworthy places
-
La Ferté-sous-Jouarre. The city was founded in the IXth century, arround a fortress on an island of the river Marne. The city underwent intense fights and destructions during the First World War. From the Renaissance till the first half of the XXth century, it was an industrial centre for millstone factories. The calcareous-siliceous rocks from this area were used as grindstones for mills. You can see such stones along the quays of Marne.
-
Les cryptes mérovingiennes. Jouarre owns a historic jewel: one of the most ancien Merovingian monuments in Europe. The holy founders of the first abbey rest in the three sarcophaguses of Saint Paul's crypt, each of them in a separate nave. The nave with Saint-Agilbert's sarcophagus has a chevet sculptured with a large low-relief representing a Tetramorph, in perfect preservation. Marble sculpted capitals are remarkable and present a style with some Roman influences.
-
L'église Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul. Jouarre church goes back to the XVth century. It was restored several times. Inside, you can see an Entombment sculpture and reliquaries.
-
La Tour Romane de Jouarre. The Romanesque Tower, originally included into the abbey, goes back to the XIth-XIIth century, even if its displays a more recent architecture, between Gothic anc Renaissance, which corresponds to its restoration during the XVIth century.
