A hike in the region Basse Normandie

A little village tour in Essay. Punctuated with ancient monuments and with houses of character, this stroll will offer you green places of peace and relaxation. You will note the vestiges of time on both sides of Vézone river.


In front of the church, take the street "rue de l'Eglise" on your right. Join the street "rue Roederer", turn to the right. Continue on the street "rue de Grouas" and turn to the left in a narrow alley. Join the street Francisque Corcelle, take the street "rue des Anciennes Halles" on your right-hand side, and just after turn to left, street of Savaraigne. When you reach the street "rue du Baron des Genetes", turn to left and take the street Pierre II on your right. At the crossing, take the right street. Go on the track that leads you to the chapel, then take the street "rue du Château". Turn to the left, in the street "rue de l'Audience" and then in the street "rue Valcaban". Turn to the right in the street "rue de la Ville" and to the left in the street "rue du Château". Turn to the right in the street "rue du Fosse Capitaine", continue on the street Jean II and when you reach the street "rue de Bonnerie", turn to left to get back the starting point.

Events and information

Worth seeing. Essay has developped a very interesting project to revitalize the territory by welcoming new country dwellers. This village proposes good conditions for the installation of home workers, particularly a high-bandwidth Wimax network. Worth seeing. The horse breeding is an important activity in the country of Essay that encompasses three stud farms, with one of them being the biggest private stud farm in France.


Noteworthy places

Eglise Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul. This is a XIIth century Romanesque church which was reshaped several times until the XVIIth century. It presents a Romanesque portal with sculptured capitals, a bell gate, and a XVth century tower staircase.
Chapelle Marguerite de Lorraine. The XIth century Castle Chapel was named in honour of Marguerite de Lorraine who was the wife of the Duke of Alençon. This building has two floors and it was the chapel of the castle during the XIIth and XVth centuries.
Le village d'Essay. Essay is a small village known from the Xth century, situated in the valley of Vézone, between Perche Natural Park of Normandy Natural Park, in the country of Alençon. A stroll in its narrow streets will make you discover the historical patrimony of this place.
