A hike in the region Midi-Pyrénées

A beautiful mountain stroll following a section of an ancient Roman way. Magnificent panoramas on the plateau of Aubrac and on the Boralde de Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac. This village is a stage on the road of Santiago de Compostela. The cross of the pilgrim on the old bridge of Saint-Chély is classified in the world patrimony of the humanity.

1- From the place of Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac, turn to the left to the street along the school and come down towards the bridge of pilgrims which steps over the river Boralde de Saint-Chély. Continue the ascent by leaving the cemetery on your right-hand side until the crossing with the road D19.
2- Cross the road D19 and take the path in front of you. Continue up to the farm of Verminières.
3- Pass in the middle of the farm and turn to the right just after.
4- Take the road through the little wood. At the border of the forest, follow a private property and take the road straight ahead which leads you to the village of Enfrux.
5- Cross the barrier, turn on your right-hand side. Locate four or five stunted beeches arranged in a line, at this landmark turn to the right and cross the field. The path runs along a low wall. Leave the GR6 on the right, and continue less than 100 m to reach the road (you will see an agricultural building).
6- Take the grassy road opposite to you.
7- Take the road in your right-hand side, it is the ancient Roman way.
8- Arrived at a crossing of several roads, take to the right. In the crossing with the small road between Aubiac and Tabournel, turn to the right and after a dozen metres, take the path on your left. At the next crossing, turn to right. Continue up to the way down after a left turn. Arrived on the road D19, turn to the left, cross the road and take immediately the road which comes down to the cemetery.
9- Go back up by the road up to the point of departure.

Access limitation for skiers. Possible ski touring in winter, but tarred surface on sections 1, 3, 5 and 9 (it will doubtless be necessary that you remove your skis off).

Noteworthy places

Croix du Pèlerin. The medieval cross on the bridge represents a pilgrim resting the hand on his staff (a stick which was supposed to chase out infidels and devils) and holding a rosary in the other hand.
La voie Romaine. The seventh section passes on the ancient Roman way which connected Rodez to Lyon. It is not the best preserved part. In the entrance of the national forest of Aubrac (above the village of Enfrux) pavement and border stones are still distinguishable.
Le neck de Belvezet. Along the ascent on the plateau, you can admire the neck of Belvezet, basalt rocky hook which stands out against the horizon.
