A hike in the region Midi-Pyrénées
An excursion to discover the former stately home of Rouergue, Saint-Geniez-d'Olt, gate between Causses and Aubrac. Village where each district is a travel in History.
1- Take the way on the left of the town hall which carries out to the pass cloister, at the end turn on the right. Continue on the commercial street up to the crossing with the road D988. Cross it and follow direction St-Saturnin de Lenne on the road D2 (avenue de la Gare). 2- At the first turn, in front of a cross, leave the road and take the track. Continue until the junction of the two ways, take that which goes up on your left, it leads you to Vaysseries. 3- Pass between the two houses, take the road on your left, continue on it about 1600m. 4- After a pink house, take the way which goes down on your left, vis-a-vis from a street which goes up. 5- At the crossing with D988, cross it and take Sannié street, then the Frayssinous street up to join the fountain place. 6- Cross the bridge, take on the left. Follow the street along the river, after the road of Prades. Arrive at the New Bridge, turn on left in order to join the other bank and again turn to Auronne street. 7- Continue on Rogery street to come back to the town hall place.

Noteworthy places

La Mairie. The town hall presents an imposing frontage, it was restored at the XIX century by Boissonnade. You can show in it the "Salle des Illustres".

Le Cloître. The cloister was built about 1347 by Augustins, who were driven out of Ste-Eulalie-d'Olt, and so then they settled in St-Geniez and stayed there.

la Chapelle des Augustins. The building, of XIV and XV centuries, carries the arms of Comte de Berri, Comtesse d'Armagnac, and those of Guillemot de Solges, adviser of the Comte d'Armagnac. The chapel was used as appendix for the church of Marnhac (you will reach it by the door situated in the town hall street). It contains reliquaries in gilded wood, a pieta, sticks of procession, and especially one very beautiful triptych out of carved wood of XVI century, masterpiece of the flamboyant Gothic art. It is attributed to itinerant Flemish artists. It represents the Adoration of the Magi in it center, the circumcision and the presentation with the temple on the two painted shutters.

Hôtel de Fajole. Mansion of the XVII century, with its carved wooden door. It hides a remarkable stone staircase.

Hôtel de Ricard. It was built in 1677, for the account of Jean de Fagole. In XIX century, the Countess of Ricard, widow and rich person, gave sumptuous parties in it.

La Statue des Marmots. This statue was carried out by the sculptor Eric Valat and was inaugurated on June 26, 1999. It symbolizes the name given to the inhabitants of St-Geniez, following a tale which reports the rescue of two children of the district of "Puits de Lacan" thanks to the kindness help of a marmot.

Monument Talabot. It is said that in the last century, Marie Savy left St-Geniez in rags to try her chance in Marseilles. She was a young and pretty person. She encountered Paulin Talabot, engineer and manufacturer of first railway lines. They married. She then became a famous women of the Parisian high society. The sculptor E. Barrias proposed her to pose for him. As she wished to see again her native land, she came back. But the jealousy of the local middle-class was considerable. She was accomodated under a stones throwing. Madam Talabot had this counterpart then: "You pull me down of my alive, I will dominate you after my death". Acquiring of the vestiges of the castle "del Rey" (in occitant, the King), she made the ruins cleaned up and asked to Magne for building a monument in her effigy.

Eglise paroissiale. The Romanesque church has been transformed at the beginning of the XVIII century. The building can be accessed by a staircase with double revolution ballustres. On the right-hand side of this staircase, on the site of the old market of grains, it is exposed the carved portal of Notre-Dame de Juéry. The primitive nave ends in a flat bedside decorated with a retable called Olta Viel (Old Altar) with twisted columns. The painting, representing the Last Supper, was completed in Livourne in 1650. On the right side, the chapel of Frezals. The new church, that was built from 1704 on by Jean Paraté, comprises six vaults. The Chorus is enlightened by four stained glasses of the XVIII century. It represents the four Evangelists. The baldachin, supporting the glory of St-Geniez, is a masterpiece of baroque art (1763).

La Cour des Miracles. Located in the dead-end of Tisserands, famous during the Revolution, because it was there where the tragic events of 1791 occured, in coffee's Mariette.

L'Hôtel du Grand Rivié. Mansion of the XVII century, classified historic building, it contains a remarkable interior staircase with stone balusters. Thomas Rivié was protected by Louvois, Minister of Louis XIV.
